Your 2021 electrical safety checklist
The New Year is the perfect time to review that ever-growing “I’ve GOT to get around to doing that” list.
Electricity is such an integral part of our lives. From the moment we wake up to the minute we tuck ourselves in for the night, we’re using it 24/7.
As a result, we can forget how dangerous and powerful it can be. All it takes is a split-second for a fault to occur and suddenly you’ve got a very serious problem on your hands.
So, what should you keep an eye out for in your home to make sure you’re as safe as possible?
Here’s HSG’s electrical checklist.
- Test your smoke alarms.
- Electrical gardening equipment should only be used if it’s dry outside.
- Take great care with DIY. These jobs account for nearly half of all severe electric shocks in the home. Make sure you locate cables in walls before drilling, you have an RCD (Residual Current Device) installed, and you check that leads and plugs are in good condition before using power tools.
- Remember that electricity and water are a deadly mix. The bathroom is arguably the most dangerous room in the house when it comes to electrical safety. Portable appliances such as hairdryers or heaters should never be used in close vicinity of water. Sockets and electrical shaver points should only be installed if they’re at least 3 meters away from the bathtub or shower.
- Arrange an EICR (Electrical Inspection Condition Report). This is a routine inspection conducted by a qualified electrician. They will check the electrical equipment in your home (including accessories, sockets, switches, and cables) to make sure everything is functioning properly and doesn’t present an increased fire risk.
- Ask your electrician about RCD and SPD protection.
- An RCD (Residual Current Device) is a safety device that automatically switches off if something is wrong. An RCD minimises the risks of electrocution and fire caused by earth faults. If it detects electricity running through an unintended path, such as a person touching a live part, it will instantly switch off the circuit, significantly reducing the risk of death or severe injury.
- An SPD (Surge Protective Device) is used to protect the electrical installation from power surges known as ‘transient overvoltages’. In many cases, this occurs due to a lightning strike. The effects of a surge can either result in instant failure or irreparable damage to equipment over a long period.
